The Magic of Mud
Chapter Five-ing: Flying and Thriving
Tally-ho! How is your summer, dear reader? Mine is going just swimmingly! Or soaringly, to be precise. This is all thanks to the Overworld expedition I set out on a few weeks ago. Let’s pick up where we left off, shall we?
The happy ghast and I had barely taken off from the Bamboo Jungle, when we found our next stop. All in the name of efficiency, and archeology in this case. A large bone-like structure caught my eye. We slowly descended so as not to spook it, but it lay perfectly still. Huzzah! A fossil! Already excavated and everything. Now that’s double efficiency. Before I had time to wonder who had left it in this muddy expanse, I jotted down the first line of my postcard:
Fossils are a mix of bone and coal or diamond, and only naturally generate in three different biomes.

I was so filled with glee that I had to perform a little dance. With all the mud and the happy ghast’s ambient murmurs, I was basically at my own festival. It was a summer road trip after all, why not make this into my own personal Minestock?
Abandoning myself to the rhythm, I shut my eyes and twirled with the force of ten background dancers, I collided with a tree. But it was a bit too soft for a trunk. And do trees usually buzz?
Bees?
Bees!
I continued to twirl, but this time in self-defense. It was about to prove very effective, I’m sure of it, but a hand reached out and pulled me into the murky, muddy water. Beneath the surface, I gazed into the face of my savior. Who was this angel? I asked, with a mouth full of bubbles. Before they could respond, I was distracted by another friend, this one slightly more amphibious!
There are three types of frogs in the Overworld, but this is the home of the warm frog.

Surrounded by frogs and their little tadpoles, we waited out the bees. When the last one finally gave up and buzzed off, we swam to shore. Reunited with the fossil, I learned that it was Kai’s find. They had been excavating the area for a few days, pretty sure that there were no more finds to unearth. They had just been returning from a froglight expedition when I had my miscommunication with the beehive.
We shared a snack in the shade of a large tree with a very impressive root system. Kai was also travelling across the Overworld, but on foot. That sounded exhausting, and so 2024! I told them all about my happy ghast, sparing no detail of my brave visit to the Nether to retrieve a dried ghast. When I described how I raised the ghastling amongst my beloved chickens, I swear I saw a tear in Kai’s eye. I know. It was very impressive, and most of all, intentional.
As the day started drawing to a close, I felt it was time to leave. I bid my goodbyes to Kai and the frogs, who looked at me expectantly before bidding me a reluctant adieu. Oh, how foolish of me! How could I not realize that they wanted to join me?
With a profuse apology, I grabbed some buckets and scooped up some tadpoles. These little swimmers would love the lake back home! I boarded the happy ghast and waved goodbye. Kai looked at me. Did they want one last staring contest? Well, I was nothing if not generous! Of course! Before I could hop down to commence my win, Kai surprised me by hopping up. Oh! Well, this worked too. We could stare at each other in the sky, what fun! The happy ghast departed, and I gave the big trees another look.
The trees that have lent their name to this biome have aerial roots and can grow both on land and in water.

The happy ghast was definitely sturdy enough for two, so we sailed smoothly into the horizon. Kai was excited to keep digging, so we kept our peepers peeped for a desert. With a flourish, I finished my postcard.
Wish you were here, in the mangrove swamp.
Will Kai and I find a desert? When will we run out of snacks? Why do you assume I will have eaten them all? What are you looking at the trail of crumbs for? But most importantly, where in the Overworld are we headed to next? Come back to find out!
